Huawei Plans 5G Network Coverage In Time For 2018 World Cup

Today Huawei and Russian telco operator MegaFon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the development of 5G network technology with the aim of getting test networks up in time to cover the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Signed at the Huawei Global Broadband Forum 2014 in Shanghai, the MoU is intended to cover the broad areas of Huawei’ and MegaFon’s cooperation to determine the requirements for construction of a 5G network, the creation of a 5G-focused team to conduct high speed network trials and test coverage during the summer World Cup in Russia, as well as to meet regularly to ascertain the progress required to standardise 5G technology.
According to a statement released by both companies, Huawei will be instrumental to develop and introduce “the latest mobile technologies such as SCMA, full duplex, and cloud base station into the 5G network, as well as providing testing 5G terminals in trial zones.” Pilot projects in test areas are expected to set up and completed by June 2017, with the intention the pilot 5G network to be ready for use by guests and participants of the 2018 football World Cup.
