Buon appetito, says Zomato, with its fifth acquisition in five months

Indian restaurant finder site Zomato just announced its fifth international acquisition this year: Cibando, Italy’s leading restaurant search service. With this, users in major Italian cities can now use Zomato. This takes Zomato’s presence to 20 countries.

“The entire Cibando team is joining Zomato and will lead the effort of building the business in Italy. I think we have a lot to learn from them about the local market,” says Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato, in a statement announcing the acquisition.

Zomato has been going global at a rapid pace. It acquired MenuMania in New Zealand, Lunchtime in the Czech Republic, Obedovat in Slovakia, and Gastronauci in Poland, all within the last five months. It also went into Canada with an investment of US$10 million, which could be a stepping stone to the US, to do battle with Yelp on its own turf.

Zomato’s US$60 million funding last month preps it for new milestones in 2015. It currently gets 35 million visits a month, more than half of which are on its mobile app. Going forward, Zomato wants to build itself up into a global food community platform.
